From respiratory physiology to rational aromatic interventions.
Join Rhiannon for a four-part online live lecture series for sensitive, evidence-informed clinical aromatherapy care for promoting optimal respiratory health.
Advanced Clinical Aromatherapy for Respiratory Care is an evidence-informed course designed for qualified aromatherapists, herbalists, naturopaths and healthcare professionals who want to deepen their understanding of the rational and clinically appropriate use of essential oils and related aromatic products within respiratory care.
Four 90-minute lectures with Rhiannon: November 4, 11, 18 & 25 @ 8pm Paris time
Across four 90-minute lectures, we will move progressively from understanding the respiratory terrain to exploring the pharmacological actions of essential oils, examining how route of administration influences therapeutic outcomes, and finally bringing these elements together through practical formulations and clinical reasoning.
UNDERSTAND > SELECT > DELIVER > INTEGRATE
Lecture 1 – November 4th
Understanding the Respiratory Sphere and its Challenges
Rhiannon says “Before choosing the oil, understand the terrain”.
The respiratory tract is not simply a series of airways. It is a highly specialised interface between the external environment and the internal body, equipped with sophisticated mechanisms of filtration, immune defence, mucus production, clearance and repair.
In this opening lecture we establish the clinical foundations needed for intelligent aromatic intervention. We will revisit relevant respiratory anatomy and physiology and examine what changes when normal respiratory function is disrupted.
From upper respiratory infections and excessive secretions to inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, persistent cough and chronic respiratory disease, we will consider the different therapeutic challenges presented by the respiratory sphere – and importantly, recognise where aromatherapy may contribute, where its limitations lie, and when referral or conventional medical management takes priority.
The clinical question: What is happening – and where might aromatic intervention realistically help?
Lecture 2 – November 11th
Respiratory Actions of Essential Oils and Related Products
Rhiannon says “Moving beyond ‘respiratory oils’ towards therapeutic actions”.
Why do some aromatic molecules influence mucus and expectoration while others affect airway sensation, inflammation, microbial activity or breathing comfort?
This lecture explores the principal actions that make essential oils and related aromatic products relevant to respiratory care. We will examine the evidence behind commonly cited actions such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, expectorant, antitussive and bronchodilatory effects, while distinguishing between traditional use, experimental evidence and clinically demonstrated effects.
Particular attention will be given to key aromatic molecules and their mechanisms, while also considering the importance of the whole essential oil and the potential contribution of hydrolats and other aromatic preparations.
The aim is not to memorise another list of essential oils, but to develop the ability to match aromatic properties with a clearly identified therapeutic objective.
The clinical question: What action do I need – and which aromatic intervention can reasonably provide it?
Lecture 3 – November 18th
Routes of Administration for the Respiratory Sphere
Rhiannon says “The right essential oil is only part of the intervention. How we deliver it matters”.
Inhalation may appear to be the obvious route for respiratory aromatherapy, but other routes occupy an important supportive place in care.
We will examine all the relevant routes of administration and consider what happens between the bottle and the respiratory tract: volatility, dose, duration of exposure, local versus systemic effects, patient acceptability and the practical realities of using aromatic interventions safely.
Special consideration will be given to vulnerable populations and situations where apparently simple methods of administration may not be appropriate.
The clinical question: How can I deliver the intervention safely and effectively to the place where it is needed?
Lecture 4 – November 25th
Putting it all Together: From Clinical Reasoning to Formulation
Rhiannon says “From knowledge to therapeutic decision-making”.
The final lecture brings the course together through practical examples covering a range of acute and chronic respiratory challenges.
Rather than beginning with a recipe, each example will begin with the person and the therapeutic problem. We will identify the principal clinical objectives, determine appropriate aromatic actions, select essential oils or related products, choose the most suitable route of administration and develop a formulation with a clear rationale.
Examples will demonstrate how apparently similar respiratory complaints may require very different approaches – and how formulations can be adapted according to age, vulnerability, symptom presentation, stage of illness and therapeutic priorities.
Participants will leave with practical formulation strategies, but more importantly with a framework for constructing their own rational respiratory interventions.
The clinical question: How do I translate assessment, evidence and aromatic knowledge into an appropriate intervention?

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the program the therapist will be able to:
Relate key aspects of respiratory anatomy, physiology and defence mechanisms to common acute and chronic respiratory challenges relevant to aromatherapy practice.
Differentiate between respiratory presentations and establish appropriate therapeutic priorities, including mucus management, inflammation, cough, bronchial tone, microbial burden, breathing comfort and associated distress.
Evaluate essential oils, hydrolats and relevant aromatic constituents according to their pharmacological actions, available evidence, traditional use, safety and suitability for the individual.
Select appropriate methods of administration according to the therapeutic target, considering dose, exposure, site of action, patient acceptability, vulnerability and safety.
Construct and justify individualised aromatic interventions and formulations for respiratory care, recognising limitations, contraindications, referral needs and when aromatherapy may or may not have an appropriate role.
